When it genuinely helps
These are the cases where the tool matches the problem.
- Your ISP is legally permitted to sell your browsing data, as in the United States
- You are on a network run by someone you do not trust and cannot avoid
- Your country filters or blocks services you have a legitimate reason to reach
- You are subject to copyright enforcement letters based on connection monitoring
- You need to appear in another country for a service you legitimately pay for
- You are researching something you would rather your network operator not associate with you
When it does nothing for you
A VPN does not make you anonymous to services you log into. Once you sign in to an account, the address you arrived from is the least of the identifying information involved.
It does not stop tracking by cookies, fingerprinting or ad identifiers, because those operate above the network layer. It does not protect against malware, phishing or a compromised device. And it does not hide your activity from the VPN provider — it relocates that visibility, which is why the provider’s logging policy and jurisdiction are the whole game.
Avoid
- Buying a VPN because an advertisement said hackers are stealing data on public Wi-Fi
- Believing a VPN makes you anonymous
- Expecting a VPN to substitute for a password manager, updates, or two-factor authentication
The public Wi-Fi argument, honestly
The classic pitch is that someone on the café network is reading your traffic. That was a real risk when most of the web was unencrypted. Today the overwhelming majority of sites use HTTPS, browsers warn loudly when they do not, and the traffic on that network is already encrypted end to end.
What an operator of that network can still see is which domains you contact, through DNS and the server name in the handshake. That is worth hiding on a network you do not trust, and it is a much smaller claim than the advertisement makes. The honest version is: a VPN on public Wi-Fi hides where you go, not what you send.
Work out the observer first
Before choosing a provider, name the observer you want to remove: your ISP, a network operator, a state, a rights holder, a service that geo-restricts. Each one implies a different requirement.
Removing your ISP means any reputable provider works. Removing a state means jurisdiction and audit history dominate. Reaching a blocked service means obfuscation matters more than privacy features. A ranking cannot answer this for you, which is why our shortlists are organised by constraint rather than by an overall "best".
