Fire Stick and Android TV run Android, so they install a real VPN app from their own store. Apple TV takes a native app from NordVPN, Proton VPN or PureVPN — not FastestVPN. Roku, PlayStation, Xbox, Samsung and LG sets cannot run a VPN at all, and a router is the only honest route.

Which of your TV devices can actually run a VPN?

The answer differs sharply by device, and almost every guide on this subject blurs that, because a page saying "here is how to install a VPN on your Roku" earns more than a page saying you cannot. Take the split first: a VPN app can only exist where the operating system exposes an interface for building a tunnel and lets third parties ship software that uses it. That is a property of the platform, and no amount of provider-switching changes it.

Fire OS, which runs every Fire TV Stick, is a fork of Android and carries the same VPN interface, so a genuine app installs and runs exactly as it does on a phone. Android TV and Google TV are the same story, which also covers the televisions from Sony, Philips, TCL and Hisense that ship Google’s platform rather than their own. The Apple TV joined this group late: tvOS exposed no VPN interface to third-party developers until 2023, which is why "Apple TV VPN app" was a flat no for years and is now a qualified yes depending on the provider.

Everything else here is a closed platform with no third-party VPN capability at all. Roku has never shipped a VPN interface and no Roku VPN app exists in its channel store. PlayStation and Xbox do not run arbitrary networking software. Samsung’s Tizen and LG’s webOS televisions sit with Roku despite being sold as smart TVs — the badge on the bezel tells you nothing, and the operating system inside decides.

How to install and use a VPN on a Fire Stick

This is the case people search for most and it is also the easiest, because a Fire Stick is a small Android device operated with a remote. Open the search on the home screen, type the provider’s name, and if the app is in the Amazon Appstore it installs in seconds. Sign in, pick a server, connect. There is no configuration file to import and nothing to flash, and any guide that has you sideloading before you have checked the Appstore has skipped the step that works.

Two things make it more awkward than the same job on a phone. Typing a long password with a directional pad is genuinely unpleasant, so the Fire TV remote app on your phone, a Bluetooth keyboard, or the code-based sign-in several providers offer will each save more time than it costs. And not every provider publishes to the Amazon Appstore. Where one does not, the documented route is to enable unknown-source installs in the developer options and fetch the provider’s own signed file from its own domain. That is legitimate; taking the same file from a forum mirror is the most common way a Fire Stick ends up running a modified build of a security application. If the file does not come from the provider’s domain, do not install it.

One caveat is specific to the hardware: older Fire TV Sticks have very little memory, and a VPN client running alongside a streaming app is a real load. On a first- or second-generation stick expect the interface to turn sluggish rather than the tunnel to fail. That is a hardware limit, not a provider defect.

Avoid

  • Sideloading a file from anywhere other than the provider’s own domain
  • Leaving developer options and unknown-source installs enabled afterwards
  • Assuming the app connects at boot — most do not until you enable that setting
  • Judging a provider by how polished its Fire Stick interface looks; the remote is a design constraint, not a security signal

What about Android TV, Google TV and the sets that run them?

Functionally this is the Fire Stick job with a friendlier shop. All four providers in our dataset list Android TV among their supported platforms, so an app exists in the Play Store for each and the install is the ordinary one. If your television is a Sony, Philips, TCL or Hisense from the last several years, check its settings menu for "Android TV" or "Google TV" before concluding your set cannot be covered — this section may apply to you rather than the router section below.

One difference from the phone version only shows up in the providers’ own documentation. Split tunnelling — choosing which applications use the tunnel — is supported on Android TV by Proton VPN, and PureVPN documents its split tunnelling as covering Windows, Android, Android TV and Fire TV specifically. On a television that matters more than it sounds, because the device that needs a foreign server for one app usually also runs a local catch-up service that works better without one.

What does not carry over from the desktop is testing. On a computer you confirm a kill switch by killing the VPN process and watching whether traffic continues, which is the only test that means anything. There is no task manager on a Fire Stick or an Android TV box, so that test is unavailable to you. The most the device allows is loading a leak-test page in its browser while connected and confirming the address and DNS resolvers changed. That is a weaker check, and a good argument for testing a provider properly on a computer before trusting it on the television.

Does the Apple TV take a native VPN app?

From some providers, yes. This changed recently enough that much published advice is still wrong: until tvOS 17 in 2023 there was no developer interface for VPN tunnels on the Apple TV, so the correct answer was no and the workaround was a router. The interface now exists, and the only question is whether a given provider has built for it.

In our dataset the platform lists for NordVPN and Proton VPN both include Apple TV, and NordVPN scores ten out of ten on platform coverage on the strength of native apps spanning desktop, mobile, Apple TV, Android TV and routers. FastestVPN’s platform list does not include Apple TV — it covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV and routers — and that absence is part of why it scores seven rather than ten on the same criterion despite being the cheapest of the four.

PureVPN is a case where writing this article found a contradiction in our own file. Its platform list included Apple TV while the written reason attached to its platform score still said there was no Apple TV app — a leftover from before the field was corrected. PureVPN has shipped a native tvOS app since 2023, so the platform list was right and the scoring reason was stale. It is fixed, its platform score moved from 7 to 8, and the change is on our corrections log. We are leaving this paragraph here rather than deleting it because a site that only tells you about its mistakes after nobody can see them is not doing the thing it claims to do.

How do you use a VPN on a Roku, PlayStation or Xbox?

You do not, and it is worth being blunt because the volume of content claiming otherwise is enormous. There is no Roku VPN app, no PlayStation VPN app and no Xbox VPN app, because none of those platforms exposes an interface a VPN could use. Every article promising to install one is, once you read past the introduction, describing one of three other things.

The first is a router install. The VPN runs on the router, the tunnel exists between the router and the provider, and the Roku or console is simply a device on a network that happens to be tunnelled. This is the only method that genuinely encrypts a console’s traffic and it is the honest recommendation when the device cannot run a client. It costs throughput: consumer router processors are slow at encryption, and a router that forwards a gigabit in the clear may manage a fraction of that through a tunnel, which matters when a 4K stream wants a sustained rate all evening. The second is sharing a connection from a computer: run the VPN on a Windows or Mac machine, share that machine’s connection, point the console at it. It works, with two problems people find later. The host must stay awake for the console to have internet at all, and the client’s kill switch may not govern the shared interface, so a dropped tunnel can leave the console connected in the clear with nothing warning you.

The third is Smart DNS, and it deserves naming precisely because providers sell it alongside VPN plans. Smart DNS redirects only the lookups a service uses to determine your region. Your traffic still travels directly to the destination, unencrypted, over your ordinary connection, entirely visible to your ISP. It is a geo-unblocking tool with no privacy property at all. It is often the quickest way to make a console appear elsewhere, and any page offering it as "a VPN for Roku" has substituted a different product for the one you asked about.

Avoid

  • Believing any guide that claims a VPN app installs on a Roku, PlayStation or Xbox
  • Treating Smart DNS as a privacy tool — it encrypts nothing
  • Sharing a laptop connection without checking the kill switch covers the shared interface
  • Buying a router before checking your provider publishes configuration for that exact model

Will a VPN get me better streams on the Fire Stick?

No. A VPN adds a hop. Traffic now travels to a server operated by your provider before it reaches the streaming service, and every extra mile costs latency and some throughput. There is no mechanism by which routing video through an additional machine makes it arrive faster.

The exception is real but specific, and it is why the question keeps being asked. If your ISP is shaping or throttling a particular kind of traffic — video from one service, or everything past a monthly threshold — it cannot identify that traffic inside a tunnel, so it cannot single it out. People in that position do see buffering improve after installing a VPN. What they have discovered is not that the VPN is fast; it is that their ISP was degrading their connection selectively, which is worth naming as the actual cause rather than crediting to the software that hid it. If that is your situation you now have evidence for a complaint, and in some jurisdictions a regulator who cares.

Before reaching for that explanation, the ordinary causes are likelier and cheaper to fix. The stick is usually on Wi-Fi, often on a congested 2.4 GHz band, frequently plugged into a port behind a metal television that acts as a shield; the 5 GHz band or an Ethernet adapter fixes more buffering than any provider change. And one service buffering while others do not points at that service, not at your line. The test is simple: if the problem appears only in the evening, only on one service, and a tunnel makes it vanish, shaping is the likely answer. If it happens on everything at all hours, the tunnel will make it worse.

How many of your device slots does a TV setup use?

All four providers we cover allow ten simultaneous connections — Proton VPN, NordVPN, PureVPN and FastestVPN are identical on this figure, which is worth stating plainly because device limits are among the things comparison tables most often get out of date. Ten is generous for one person and tight for a household: two phones, two laptops, a tablet, a television, a streaming stick and a work machine is eight before anyone adds a console.

The fact that matters here is that a router install counts as one connection no matter how many devices sit behind it. A house with a Roku, two consoles and three smart TVs on a tunnelled router has spent one slot on all six. That is the usual reason people set a router up, and it is a stronger argument for it than any privacy benefit, because the alternative is that those six devices cannot be covered at all.

It cuts the other way too, and this is where people build the setup wrong. Installing a client on a device that already sits behind a tunnelled router spends a second slot to tunnel the same traffic twice — slower, no more private, one fewer connection available. What a VPN on the television will not do for you

It will not reliably hand you another country’s streaming catalogue, and we will not tell you which provider unblocks which service, because that claim has a shelf life measured in weeks. Detection is an active arms race: services identify datacentre address ranges and block them, providers rotate addresses, and a page that was true when written is wrong by the time it ranks.

On a television there is a second reason the address is not the whole story, and it catches people who did everything else right. The device is registered to an account with a country attached. A Fire Stick signed in to a UK Amazon account has a UK store, UK apps and UK regional behaviour, and the tunnel changes none of it. The same applies to the App Store region on an Apple TV and the Google account on an Android TV box. Payment country, account country and app availability all sit above the network layer, where a VPN has no reach.

And it does not make what you watch private from everyone. It moves the visibility: your ISP stops seeing which services you stream and your VPN provider takes that position instead, which is why logging policy, audit history and jurisdiction are the whole of the decision and why our rubric weights audit evidence above everything else. The service itself still knows exactly who you are, because you signed in. That is not a flaw in the tunnel; it is the boundary of what a tunnel does, and it applies to a Fire Stick exactly as it does to a laptop.

It depends entirely on the operating system.
